Sleep Deprived Mama

Chloe has never been a great sleeper.  I can’t say I don’t deserve this – my mom tells me I didn’t sleep through the night until I was 4.  I can only hope that that’s not what we’re facing!!   There are nights when we can see the light at the end of the tunnel, where we think that maybe, just maybe, she might be figuring out this whole sleep thing.  Then, inevitably, she gets a cold, starts teething, we stay out past her bedtime, she figures out how to crawl, bedtime changes because of daylight savings….something happens that messes with her sleep.

This week it’s a cold/ear infection/teething.  We’re up many, many times a night.  I’m lucky to have a wonderful husband who gets up many of the many, many times.  But….I’m still exhausted and usually half asleep and zombie-like when I go in to get  Chloe back to sleep.

At about 4AM last night she was crying, so in I went.  As I got into her room, I couldn’t figure out where she was!!  Common sense would suggest that since I could hear her screaming I’d know she was there.  She can’t pull herself up to standing, let alone climb out of her crib, so, again, you’d think I’d know she was there.  But it was the middle of the night and I was half asleep, so I couldn’t find my screaming baby curled up in the corner of her crib.

I’m sure it was really only about 2 seconds before I spotted her, but considering that I knew she had to be within about 8 square feet, I felt pretty silly that it took me that long even.  In my sleep-deprived defense, she normally scoots down to the bottom of her crib and instead had moved up to the top….

Okay, it’s still pretty sad.  I think we all just need a good night’s sleep!!

BabyMort has arrived!!

Okay, so she arrived over a week ago, but as it turns out, babies are a lot of work!!  Her arrival went something like this…  (I don’t think there’s anything too descriptive in here, but read at your own risk anyways!!)

Tuesday, May 12 I got checked by my Dr. and was 4cm and 90% effaced.  That evening I started having mild contractions every 10 minutes or so.  This was big news for me, because I hadn’t even noticed a Braxton Hicks up to this point.  By Wednesday at lunch they were a lot closer together, about 3 minutes apart, but still not painful – more uncomfortable.  Still, being as close as they were, we called the  doctor.  They had me come in, checked me and monitored my contractions for a while.  They decided Iwas in labor and sent me over to the hospital.  Six hours later I hadn’t progressed any further, so I decided to go home and wait it out instead of having any sort of interventions done.  We didn’t think waiting it out meant waiting another 5 days….

Finally, after dealing with contractions that changed frequency and intensity all weekend long, they got stronger and more regular at about 9PM on Sunday, May 17.   At 11PM they were about 3 minutes apart and DaddyMort really wanted to call First Nurse and head to the hospital.  I didn’t want to go there and be sent home again, so I was reluctant.  I decided to take a nice hot shower to see if that changed anything.  When it didn’t, I gave in, admitted I was really in labor this time, and said we could head over to the hospital.  It was about 1 AM by the time we got all checked in and they checked me – 6 cm with the baby at +1.

As I’ve said before, I really wanted to go natural.  I tried walking around, using the birthing ball, the whirlpool – whatever I could.  By about 3:30 AM I wasn’t sure I could do it.  I was soooo tired and barely getting any break between the contractions.  I decided to try Nubain.  I was told that it wouldn’t really make the contractions any less painful, only a little easier in between.  That’s exactly what it did for about an hour.  Although I would have liked to go drug-free, I think this really was the best decision for us.  I think the hour of pseudo-rest gave me just enough energy to get through the rest of labor, but the Nubain still allowed me to get up and move around, we didn’t have to be continuously monitored and I didn’t have to be hooked up to an IV the whole time.

About the time the Nubain had worn off, I could tell I was in transition – I was sick, had the shakes, couldn’t really tell when the contractions started or stopped…  DaddyMort reminded me that this meant we were getting close and he knew I could do it.  (He was great the whole time!!)  At about 6:45 AM I started pushing.  At 7:32 they broke my water.  And at 8:07 AM on Monday, May 18, we met BabyMort for the first time!!

My honest reaction was shock, for a few different reasons.  I didn’t realize she was that close to “popping” out, but from what I’m told, no one really did!! I guess she pretty much came out from head to toes all at once.   I think I heard my mom and Aaron crying before I realized she was out.  And when I actually saw her, I had a hard time believing that she had come from me.

But she had!!  She came in to this world exactly 2 weeks before her due date, weighing in at 6 lb 14 oz, 19.5 inches long and absolutely perfect!!

It’s done!! (aka – I have the best hubby!!)

After many weeks of hard work, the nursery is done!!  We formulated our plan shortly after finding out that BabyMort is a girl, but we had to wait for nicer weather, because we were replacing the windows in her room which had to be done first.  That was followed by sheetrock repair, priming, painting and then came the stripes!!  After that, the trim and doors were all painted, along with a bookcase, the crib was put together and a shelf was built and painted.  It was a lot of work, done mostly by DaddyMort, but I love the final result!!  He gives me all the credit for being “the visionary” but I know it’s his hard work that made it all come together!!

You’ll notice a dog in the pictures of the finished nursery.  Turns out, the rug we got is “dog-approved” by all 3.  I was in the chair folding clothes yesterday and all 3 boys just napped on the rug the whole time.  Good to know it’ll be nice and soft for BabyMort…although it will be covered in dog hair at this rate!!

Over 60% there…

There’s no hiding it – I’m pregnant.  According to my mom, who is completely unbiased, “I’m just so darn cute!!”  That’s good for me at least!!  At my 20 week appointment, Dr. Leeds said I was measuring small.  Luckily, at my 24 week appointment, I measured 24 centimeters, which in his words is, perfect!!

How funny is Nick – he has to be right there every time my picture gets taken.

Chloe Mae likes to sleep all day and party all night.  She seems to like to do the worm, kick and just wiggle in general.  On Sunday morning, while I was still sound asleep, Aaron could tell Chloe was moving around a lot, so he nudged me into rolling over so that my belly was against his back.  He was then treated to a ‘backrub’ by his daughter.  Isn’t he adorable??  I got warm fuzzies when he told me about it when I woke up.

She’s about a pound and a half in weight now.   Her lungs are starting to develop for breathing in the real world and her nostrils are opening this week so that she can practice breathing.  Her fingernails and toenails are starting to grow out over her nail beds and her hair is developing color.  I also read that she’s starting to fatten up a little this week, so she won’t look quite so wrinkly.

I started working at a financial agency last week.  It’s a temp job through the end of April, because they’re so busy with tax season.  The future of the job is up in the air after that, but I’m really hoping they decide they need someone part-time starting about August 😀  I’d been holding off on buying maternity clothes, because I figured I really wouldn’t need many if I was unemployed.  A few days into last week, I realized I’d need more if I was working for the next 2.5 months, so we went shopping in Des Moines over the weekend.  My wonderful husband encouraged me to buy whatever I wanted, but staying true to form, I stuck with the sale items as much as possible.  I got some good stuff and feel cute when I go to work now instead of frumpy!!

We also got our nursery furniture over the weekend.  We’d found a couple pieces we really liked at Homemakers, and after looking a few more places and thinking about it for a few more weeks, we decided that’s what we wanted.  The crib came with a toddler rail, so it’ll convert into a bed for Chloe in a couple years and the changing table is a dresser, with the top part being removable.  We picked it up on Monday night in my mom’s RAV.  The crib box was bigger than we thought it would be, but luckily her RAV has a luggage rack, so the nice guys at Homemakers tied it on tight and we made it back to Ames without any problems.  I’m getting antsy for the weather to improve a little so we can start working on the nursery.  We’re replacing the windows in her room, which we want to get done before we paint, since there will probably be some sheetrock repair, but don’t really want a hole in the side of our house when it’s 20 degrees outside!!

The Ultrasound says…

We’re having a girl!!  The ultrasound tech got great “money shots” and felt really confident that we’re having a girl.  The whole ultrasound experience was amazing.  We saw her heart beating, she stretched out a few times, moved her arms and legs around and even sucking with her cute little lips.  So fantastic!!

She was being a little stubborn and it took a while before the tech could get a good angle on the head to measure for size, but that was okay with us, because we got to watch our girl longer.  She’s measuring perfectly – probably about 12 oz. right now.  The doctor said I’m measuring small, but as long as the baby is measuring okay (which she is) then there’s nothing to worry about.  I’m going to go with the theory that I’m measuring small because I was so fit and had such amazing ab muscles to start with.    If anyone tries to burst my bubble, I’ll totally just brush it off as hogwash.

20 down, 20 to go

I haven’t given a BabyMort vs. Produce comparison in a while, so here goes…  At 20 weeks, from head to toe, BabyMort is about the length of a banana, approximately 10 inches.  A produce reference for MamaMort has also been thrown out this week.  My uterus is about the size of a cantaloupe.  BabyMort is swallowing more, practicing for digestion, and producing meconium (which I’ve heard is a blast to deal with…)  BabyMort can hear sounds now, my voice, heartbeat, and even sounds outside the belly.  If there’s an especially loud sound, he/she will cover its ears with its hands – I imagine it’s adorable 😀

Being about halfway through the 2nd trimester, I have to agree that this has been easier than the first.  I don’t get nauseous anymore and have learned to eat often enough that I rarely feel sick from that.  I still find myself going to the bathroom a lot, but I’m sure a lot of that has to do with the fact that I drink more water.  The only time it really bothers me is at 2AM, but even that has become so routine that it doesn’t bother me too much.  My lower back and hips are bothering me a little more, but the Snoogle I got for Christmas seems to be helping and I think the prenatal yoga will do wonders for me as well.

After the first time I felt BabyMort move I didn’t really mention anything to DaddyMort when I’d feel BabyMort move.  I know he really wants to feel that as well, so I didn’t see the point in constantly mentioning it.  Something, when we’re just hanging out on the couch or just waking up in the morning, he’ll rest his hand just under my belly button in hopes of feeling something.  Well, Sunday morning he said, “I just felt the baby move!”  And by golly, the baby had moved!!  I felt it probably 4 or 5 more times in the next couple minutes, but never said anything.  A couple of those times though, he’d say “I just felt it again!!”  Our doctor told us he probably wouldn’t feel anything until 22-24 weeks, so DaddyMort said, “Dr. Leeds will tell me I didn’t feel it…”  I figure since he said something before I did that he must have actually felt it, so I told him just not to mention it to Dr. Leeds and that way his bubble can’t be burst!!

We have our ultrasound in 3 days and we’re so excited!!  I know I’ve said it before, but I just can’t wait until we’ve seen our little baby and can refer to it as he or she instead of, well, it!!  We’ve pretty much said from the start that we wanted to find out, although I’m sure both of us have had our moments where we thought about waiting, but I know I’ll feel so much better once we know!!

Here’s what I look like this week.  I don’t know if I look a whole lot different than last week, although I have gained a couple pounds since last weekend, so hopefully some of it is the baby and it’s not all just sitting around in my hips!!

I’ve heard of this mysterious “popping…”

When we took the 19 week belly shot picture of me on Monday night, I didn’t think I seemed “that big” for 19 weeks. I know everyone’s different, but the pictures I’d been looking at in a forum had others looking a lot bigger!! Then we woke up Tuesday morning and DaddyMort and I independently came to the conclusion that I had grown over night – still not looking huge, but definitely bigger than the night before. Several people commented on my growing belly, a few even copping a feel, at work on Tuesday. The scale on Wednesday morning shows that I’ve gained 2 pounds since this weekend, after consistently weighing in at the same weight for a couple weeks. Apparently BabyMort and I had a growth spurt!!
