BabyMort has arrived!!

Okay, so she arrived over a week ago, but as it turns out, babies are a lot of work!!  Her arrival went something like this…  (I don’t think there’s anything too descriptive in here, but read at your own risk anyways!!)

Tuesday, May 12 I got checked by my Dr. and was 4cm and 90% effaced.  That evening I started having mild contractions every 10 minutes or so.  This was big news for me, because I hadn’t even noticed a Braxton Hicks up to this point.  By Wednesday at lunch they were a lot closer together, about 3 minutes apart, but still not painful – more uncomfortable.  Still, being as close as they were, we called the  doctor.  They had me come in, checked me and monitored my contractions for a while.  They decided Iwas in labor and sent me over to the hospital.  Six hours later I hadn’t progressed any further, so I decided to go home and wait it out instead of having any sort of interventions done.  We didn’t think waiting it out meant waiting another 5 days….

Finally, after dealing with contractions that changed frequency and intensity all weekend long, they got stronger and more regular at about 9PM on Sunday, May 17.   At 11PM they were about 3 minutes apart and DaddyMort really wanted to call First Nurse and head to the hospital.  I didn’t want to go there and be sent home again, so I was reluctant.  I decided to take a nice hot shower to see if that changed anything.  When it didn’t, I gave in, admitted I was really in labor this time, and said we could head over to the hospital.  It was about 1 AM by the time we got all checked in and they checked me – 6 cm with the baby at +1.

As I’ve said before, I really wanted to go natural.  I tried walking around, using the birthing ball, the whirlpool – whatever I could.  By about 3:30 AM I wasn’t sure I could do it.  I was soooo tired and barely getting any break between the contractions.  I decided to try Nubain.  I was told that it wouldn’t really make the contractions any less painful, only a little easier in between.  That’s exactly what it did for about an hour.  Although I would have liked to go drug-free, I think this really was the best decision for us.  I think the hour of pseudo-rest gave me just enough energy to get through the rest of labor, but the Nubain still allowed me to get up and move around, we didn’t have to be continuously monitored and I didn’t have to be hooked up to an IV the whole time.

About the time the Nubain had worn off, I could tell I was in transition – I was sick, had the shakes, couldn’t really tell when the contractions started or stopped…  DaddyMort reminded me that this meant we were getting close and he knew I could do it.  (He was great the whole time!!)  At about 6:45 AM I started pushing.  At 7:32 they broke my water.  And at 8:07 AM on Monday, May 18, we met BabyMort for the first time!!

My honest reaction was shock, for a few different reasons.  I didn’t realize she was that close to “popping” out, but from what I’m told, no one really did!! I guess she pretty much came out from head to toes all at once.   I think I heard my mom and Aaron crying before I realized she was out.  And when I actually saw her, I had a hard time believing that she had come from me.

But she had!!  She came in to this world exactly 2 weeks before her due date, weighing in at 6 lb 14 oz, 19.5 inches long and absolutely perfect!!

It’s done!! (aka – I have the best hubby!!)

After many weeks of hard work, the nursery is done!!  We formulated our plan shortly after finding out that BabyMort is a girl, but we had to wait for nicer weather, because we were replacing the windows in her room which had to be done first.  That was followed by sheetrock repair, priming, painting and then came the stripes!!  After that, the trim and doors were all painted, along with a bookcase, the crib was put together and a shelf was built and painted.  It was a lot of work, done mostly by DaddyMort, but I love the final result!!  He gives me all the credit for being “the visionary” but I know it’s his hard work that made it all come together!!

You’ll notice a dog in the pictures of the finished nursery.  Turns out, the rug we got is “dog-approved” by all 3.  I was in the chair folding clothes yesterday and all 3 boys just napped on the rug the whole time.  Good to know it’ll be nice and soft for BabyMort…although it will be covered in dog hair at this rate!!

Over 60% there…

There’s no hiding it – I’m pregnant.  According to my mom, who is completely unbiased, “I’m just so darn cute!!”  That’s good for me at least!!  At my 20 week appointment, Dr. Leeds said I was measuring small.  Luckily, at my 24 week appointment, I measured 24 centimeters, which in his words is, perfect!!
24 week belly shot

How funny is Nick – he has to be right there every time my picture gets taken.

Chloe Mae likes to sleep all day and party all night.  She seems to like to do the worm, kick and just wiggle in general.  On Sunday morning, while I was still sound asleep, Aaron could tell Chloe was moving around a lot, so he nudged me into rolling over so that my belly was against his back.  He was then treated to a ‘backrub’ by his daughter.  Isn’t he adorable??  I got warm fuzzies when he told me about it when I woke up.

She’s about a pound and a half in weight now.   Her lungs are starting to develop for breathing in the real world and her nostrils are opening this week so that she can practice breathing.  Her fingernails and toenails are starting to grow out over her nail beds and her hair is developing color.  I also read that she’s starting to fatten up a little this week, so she won’t look quite so wrinkly.

I started working at a financial agency last week.  It’s a temp job through the end of April, because they’re so busy with tax season.  The future of the job is up in the air after that, but I’m really hoping they decide they need someone part-time starting about August 😀  I’d been holding off on buying maternity clothes, because I figured I really wouldn’t need many if I was unemployed.  A few days into last week, I realized I’d need more if I was working for the next 2.5 months, so we went shopping in Des Moines over the weekend.  My wonderful husband encouraged me to buy whatever I wanted, but staying true to form, I stuck with the sale items as much as possible.  I got some good stuff and feel cute when I go to work now instead of frumpy!!

We also got our nursery furniture over the weekend.  We’d found a couple pieces we really liked at Homemakers, and after looking a few more places and thinking about it for a few more weeks, we decided that’s what we wanted.  The crib came with a toddler rail, so it’ll convert into a bed for Chloe in a couple years and the changing table is a dresser, with the top part being removable.  We picked it up on Monday night in my mom’s RAV.  The crib box was bigger than we thought it would be, but luckily her RAV has a luggage rack, so the nice guys at Homemakers tied it on tight and we made it back to Ames without any problems.  I’m getting antsy for the weather to improve a little so we can start working on the nursery.  We’re replacing the windows in her room, which we want to get done before we paint, since there will probably be some sheetrock repair, but don’t really want a hole in the side of our house when it’s 20 degrees outside!!

Hooray – we have our ultrasound scheduled!!

At our last Doctor’s appointment, at 15.5 weeks, it seemed like our doctor was in and out of the room in 30 seconds flat.  As he was leaving the room, he said, “See ya’ in 4 weeks.”  I was waiting for him to say something about our ultrasound, since I’d be 19.5 weeks and the standard ultrasound is done between 18 and 22 weeks, but he didn’t and then he was out the door.  Looking back, I should have stopped him and asked, but I honestly don’t think I actually believed that he was leaving the room already – he never even asked if we had any new questions or concerns!!

I like my doctor and understand (or at least try to) that he has all kinds of interruptions and lots of appointments crammed into the day.  We didn’t have any pressing questions, and I know that if I had stopped him and asked, he would have taken the time to thoroughly answer all of our questions.

But…I’d had it in my head that we’d get to have our ultrasound in January.  We want to find out the gender – I’m a planner!!  And I’m also the type of person who likes concrete evidence, not abstract ideas, so, I want to see BabyMort!!  I called the Doctor’s office yesterday to ask about scheduling one.  She asked who our insurance provider is, I said Blue Cross Blue Shield, and she immediately responded with, “They don’t cover ultrasounds unless the doctor says one is medically necessary.”  I told her that I had been told by my doctor that I’d have one between 18-22 weeks to check on the development.  She, again, just responded with, “BCBS doesn’t cover ultrasounds unless the doctor says one is medically necessary.”

I was thinking, “It seems to me like checking on the development of a baby and getting a better idea of the due date is medically necessary,” but I didn’t want to fight with the receptionist.  It wasn’t going to get me anywhere.  So, I said okay and hung up.  Then, I complained to my husband and friends, because it wasn’t fair (mature, I know) and asked friends who had been pregnant before about their experience.  BCBS is one of the most common providers in Iowa, so I was having a tough time believing that our plan, which is the best option the hotel offers, wouldn’t cover 1 ultrasound.  Everyone I asked told me it was ridiculous that I wouldn’t get a standard ultrasound around 20 weeks, so at least I didn’t feel like I was being a crazy, hormonal pregnant woman!!

Today, my Knight in Shining Armor arrived – aka DaddyMort.  He called the insurance company, who told him that 1 ultrasound is covered as well as any others deemed necessary by the doctor (just not an ‘elective’ ultrasound if, for example, the sex can’t be determined at this first one.)  When he explained that our Doctor’s office was telling us it wasn’t, they conducted a 3-way call between them, DaddyMort, and the Doctor’s office.

It’s amazing how the story can change when the insurance company is on the line.  The exact same receptionist told DaddyMort that “of course you have 1 ultrasound covered.  And even if you didn’t, we’d never tell someone they couldn’t get an ultrasound.  We’d always give the option of having one, but paying out of pocket.”  That is so not the conversation that had transpired 24 hours prior!!  But, I’m a grown woman who is about to have a baby, so I’m going to try to look past all of this, and just be happy that the situation has been straightened out!!

After a stern warning from DaddyMort to be nice to the receptionist (see above about being a grown woman…), I called and rescheduled our next appointment for a few days later so that we could have our ultrasound at the same time.  The big day is Thursday, January 15th.  As long as BabyMort cooperates, we’ll know (and share) if we’re having a boy or a girl in just a couple weeks!!

“I grow babies!!”

We had people over on Sunday for a cookie exchange (yum!!) and were talking about Christmas trees – real vs. fake, who waters it, how long it stays up, etc…   A friend was mentioning that she has a hard time remembering to water their tree, and I said that I never thought about it, but maybe I would more often if it was my job.  It’s Aaron’s job though, so it just never even occurs to me.  To that, my mom lovingly asked, “What do you do around here?!?”  I quickly responded that, “I grow babies!!”

But I thought this was a good time to let you know, for those who aren’t aware, that I have an amazing husband.  I’ll admit, he probably does more around the house than I do.  He likes to cook, so he cooks most of our meals.  He doesn’t hate doing dishes by hand the way I do, so if there’s a backlog of dishes, he does the extras.  He’s okay with folding laundry one basket at a time, whereas I prefer to have a mountain on the bed to fold all at once, so he usually ends up folding.  The list goes on and on…  That’s not to say that I don’t do anything, but I know I’m a very lucky girl when it comes to the housework department.

I’d like chips, but…

Aaron (aka DaddyMort :-D) was going to refill his coffee this afternoon and he grabbed my cup to refill my water.  Then, on his way out the door, he asked if I needed anything else.  I responded with, “I’d really like chips, so could you grab a plate for the apple??”  He was out the door for about 3 seconds before he came back in to say, “What?!?”

I explained that while I was craving chips, I knew that I should eat fruit instead.  My theory was that if I ate the apple with peanut butter, then I’d be satisfied and no longer wanting junk food.

Well, I ate the apple with peanut butter, but I wasn’t satisfied and I still wanted chips.  So…I ate chips.  But I had fruit first!!  That’s a step in the right direction, right?!?

My name is Blakely, and I’m a junk-food addict…

I’ll start out by saying that I know that I’ve made some ‘less-than-stellar’ nutritional choices over the last few weeks.  But, if I’m hungry and the only thing that sounds even relatively edible to me (also see: doesn’t make me want to immediately throw-up) happens to be a cheap Totino’s pizza or a double decker taco from Taco Bell, then I’m going to eat a cheap Totino’s pizza or a double decker taco.  Unfortunately for my wonderful husband, my food cravings/aversions end up deciding most of our meals for us, and while pizza or mexican for 90% of our meals is fine by me, he’s not so pleased…

As I’m entering my 13th week (both sites I look at agree that BabyMort is about the size of a peach this week!!) I think some of my nausea/morning sickness problems are going away.  But since I’m still not feeling 100%, I’ve promised my husband that he won’t have to eat more than 1 meal a day that’s pizza or mexican.  That’s not to say that I won’t though 😀

When I’m not feeling sick, I do try to fit in my fruits and veggies for the day and I make sure to take my vitamin every day, so I don’t feel like I’m doing too bad.  Although that may just be me in total denial!!
